Egypt Reserves 64 Parliament Seats for Women

egypt parliamentOn June 13, 2009, the Egyptian parliament passed an amendment to the People’s Council Law, reserving 64 out of the 508 seats in the parliament for women.

The amendment will come into force in the upcoming parliamentary elections, and will remain in force for two parliamentary terms, on the assumption that, after this period, there will no longer be any need for affirmative action.

Parliament speaker Safwat Al-Sharif characterized this as a historic day for Egypt’s democracy and reform process.
