Malawi now has her first ever woman vice president. Joyce Banda was sworn in on Friday to take over the post in a ceremony held at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, Malawi.
Banda was the first to be sworn in before President Mutharika took the oath of office administered by Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo.
The ceremony was attended by among other African leaders, Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe, Zambia’s Rupiya Bwezani Banda, and Mozambique’s Armando Guebuza.
Banda, a wife of former Malawi Chief Justice Richard Banda who is now chief judge in Swaziland , held a Bible as she took the oath vowing to “truly perform the function of the highest office” of vice president of the Republic of Malawi.
